Canadian Centre for Energy Information
Marketing Communications
The Centre’s web portal covers the Canadian energy system from the mainstays of oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear and hydropower through to solar, wind, thermal, biomass, geothermal and fuel cells. As a not-for-profit organization they are guided by independent advisors and directed by an Executive Board representing a diverse cross-section of sectors and energy stakeholders.

Their audience consists of funders, educators, students, energy industry and government.

In 2009, the Centre decided it was time to re-vamp the look, feel and functionality of the online portal to continue to be the leading source for energy information in Canada.

Starting with a high-energy ‘educational’ colour palette, the project took off from there. The portal is a huge machine and so much of the design process was redefining how users got to the content they needed. The menu system changed, social media was added, colours changed to the new bight tones, the bookstore was updated and the list goes on. Imagery was changed to try and be more consumer focused rather than the industry based shots of the past. Design and function came together to make 2009 total visitors the second highest in the Centre for Energy’s six-year history at 488,250.

Once the portal was complete, the look and feel transferred to all other materials. Easily accessible PDF downloads for students and teachers, updated publications and portal content. The project continues to grow and evolve, with more new and exciting programming to engage more Canadians about everything energy.
